In no field of sport can the game be won by defense alone. I’m a football fan. I don’t see much football where i live, just the odd final or playoff game. If you know football, and the blue team is 47 points ahead, and the 4th quarter is well under way, they bring in the 3rd string quarterback, let him get some game time, and trust the defense to hold the game for you. Now, at this point, you can play defense to win. Otherwise defense alone never wins a game.
I’m troubled by all the people playing defense in the kingdom. Some years back our church decided to go house to house within a few blocks of our church to make people know we were here, that we cared, that here was a church on that corner where they were welcome. Rather surprisingly we found quite a number of players sitting on the bench- people who had once been a part of a church family but moved into the area or just dropped out and they no longer were involved- anywhere spiritually. Not that church is the cure all for life’s problems but rarely does anyone drop out of the church community and remain in ministry very long.In fact they rarely maintain any form of vibrant Christian life. The faith community is the team and we win together.
Maybe I like football because it is a contact sport. You put on the pads and you hit and hit and hit. That may be where I learned something about ministry. It too is a contact sport. You just can’t move forward without contact. You cannot advance yourself in the the kingdom without contact with others like your self- a team, a church family and then others on the other side. The difference being we don’t view the other side as someone to be beaten but someone to be won. That too takes contact.
They are sitting everywhere, in churches or at home in front of the gospel TV, playing it safe. No contact, no progress, no spiritual life and no future. Are they playing it safe or are they out of the game? I wonder what Jesus would say? Would he remind us that at one time he spoke about buried talents?
